الملخص

Injuries to the abdomen as are as old as the mankind itself. Although blunt abdominal trauma constitutes only 0.1 % of all hospital admissions, it is associated with 20-30% mortality, majority of which is attributed to associated injuries of head, thorax and extremities. The most important factor in the management of blunt abdominal trauma is triage of the patients who require either an immediate laparatomy or observation alone. Triaging holds even greater place during mass casualties and wars. For this purpose a rapid, reliable, easily available and reproducible investigation is needed which can adjunct the clinical judgment. Sonography or Focused Abdominal Sonography in Trauma (FAST) is used for this purpose in most of the trauma centres across the globe for the initial screening of cases of blunt abdominal trauma. Because of its good sensitivity and specificity immediate surgical intervention can be justified in patients of blunt abdominal trauma who have positive findings on sonography/FAST. FAST/sonography findings can be subsequently used to triage patients for the requirement of CECT/ surgery.
